Malcolm could easily come across as a lonely and reclusive misfit. People who would choose to judge him, could mistake him for some kind of an idiot, but let’s have it right, Malcolm is actually a master of all things technical and quite the professor when it comes to engineering and gadgets. A tram-spotter living alone in inner-Melbourne after the death of his mother, he loses his dream job with the Tramways after he takes a joy ride in his own mini tram (worthy of anything Q could create for Mr. Bond). If it wasn’t for the locals keeping an eye on Malcolm he would probably end up in deep trouble having no income or prospects. To help with his cash situation, Malcolm advertises for a lodger. Fresh from a stay at Her Majesty’s big house arrives Frank, swiftly followed by his girlfriend Judith. The pair are initially stunned by Malcolm’s collection of gadgets and inventions, but soon enough the three become firm friends. When Frank decides it is time to get back to robbing and stealing, he can think of no better designer for his getaway car than Malcolm.
This wildly melodramatic tale of a kabuki female impersonator who exacts a long-delayed revenge on the men who drove his parents to suicide is played out against a backdrop of comic rivalries between thieves in the Tokyo underworld. Kazuo Hasegawa plays the dual role of the actor and the thief in a film which celebrates his 300th screen appearance. A heady mixture of swooning romanticism and stylised action, with a soundtrack that ranges from traditional Japanese music to lush Hollywood strings and cocktail jazz, 'An Actor's Revenge' is a cinematic tour de force.
Acclaimed British director Shane Meadows' assured debut feature Small Time is a tale of petty crime in the suburbs of Nottingham, starring Meadows himself as Jumbo, leader of a band of small-time crooks. Featuring energetic handheld camera work, brilliant comic dialogue and a host of ironic film references, Small Time clearly reveals Meadows' flair for larger-than-life characters and ability to extract accomplished, semi-improvised performances from talented non-professionals.

Patrice Chereau's gripping and intimate drama, adapted from Joseph Conrad's novella "The Return", charts the sudden unravelling of a bourgeois married couple's perfectly ordered lives. Pascal Greggory plays the affluent and successful Jean Hervey, whose world is shattered when he arrives home to find a letter from his wife Gabrielle (Isabelle Huppert) in which she confesses to an affair and announces she has left him. But when a remorseful Gabrielle unexpectedly returns, the scene is set for a confrontation fraught with anger, bitterness and revelation that will seal the couple's fate forever. Atmospherically recreating Belle Epoque Paris in visually stunning style and featuring two exceptional lead performances, "Gabrielle" is an extraordinarily intense and unrelentingly emotional study of a relationship in crisis.
Arts patron Mrs. Claypool (Margaret Dumont) intends to pay pompous opera star Lassparri (Walter Woolf King) $1,000 per performance. Hey, maybe that's why they call it grand opera! Grand comedy, too, as Groucho, Chico and Harpo cram a ship's stateroom and more than wall-to-wall gags, one-liners, musical riffs and two hard-boiled eggs - all while skewering Lassparri's schemes and helping two young hopefuls Rosa and Riccardo (Kitty Carlisle and Allan Jones) get a break. To save the opera, our heroes must first destroy it. And they must also gain ocean passage as stowaways, pull the wool (if not the beards) over the eyes of City Hall, shred legal mumbo-jumbo into a Sanity Clause, pester dowager Claypool and unleash so much glee that many say this is the best Marx Brothers movie. Seeing is believing.
