A Man Escaped (1956)Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut
Based on the true story of Resistance fighter Andre Devigny, who was imprisoned and sentenced to death by the Nazis during the Second World War, the film reconstructs his actual cell at the Lyons fortress of Montluc, and follows his meticulous plans for escape. This totally involving and thrilling tale of courage and faith is all the more authentic for its use of non-professional actors and Bresson's spare style.
Spanning the years 1939-52, the story follows a company of actors who tour the length and breadth of Greece performing a pastoral folk tale. Observing the upheaval wrought upon them during this politically turbulent period, the film also offers a daringly critical comment upon the times in which it was made. That Angelopoulos shot the film under the noses of the Colonel's semi-fascist regime makes his achievement all the more remarkable.
Samantha Morton's directorial debut is a clear-eyed portrait of a young girl uncertainly suspended between the care of incompetent parents and an overwhelmed social-services system. Working alongside acclaimed writer Tony Grisoni, Morton has created a fictional script that gives an honest and intimate child's-eye view of the care system in the UK. Badly beaten by her father (Robert Carlyle), 11 year old Lucy (Molly Windsor) turns to the social services for help and finds herself in a chaotic children's home, sharing a room with Lauren (Lauren Socha), who after initial hostilities takes Lucy under her wing.
Sylvia is based on the emotional true story of the passionate yet turbulent relationship between two of the greatest poets of the twentieth century. Sylvia Plath (Paltrow) and Ted Hughes (Craig) shared an unbreakable bond of love which is beautifully portrayed in this critically acclaimed and very moving film, it is a must-see.
This delightful comedy is the debut film of director Ivan Passer and a signature work of the Czech New Wave. The film follows two old friends, both musicians, reunited when one returns to the small village where they grew up. Finding humour in every aspect of ordinary life, the film shows true affection and understanding for all its characters. Addressing the concerns of living in a totalitarian state with a beguiling lightness of touch, and enchantingly shot by Miroslav Ondricek, 'Intimate Lighting' is a subtle and beautifully observed drama of the everyday.
Clelia (Eleonora Rossi-Drago) embarks from Rome to set up a fashion-salon in Torino. Shortly after arrival, she finds herself caught up in the (melo) dramas of a bourgeoise circle of acquaintances (including the iconic Valentina Cortese), and their attendant attempts at suicide, their class prejudices, and the romantic alliances that threaten to transform the social clique into an emotional tar-pit.
Sweeping and visually resplendent, 'The Mission' is a powerful action epic about a man of the sword (Robert DeNiro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons) who unite to shield a South American Indian tribe from brutal subjugation by 18th Century colonial empires.
Janos (Péter Andorai) and Katalin (Ildikó Bánsági) are strangers but forced to pose as husband and wife to hide their links to the anti-Nazi resistance in Budapest 1944. The intensity and intimacy of this relationship forces them to passionately confront their past, challenging what they believe and in whom they can place their trust.
Janne Hyytiainen plays Koistinen, a shy and awkward night watchman shunned by his colleagues and whose well-meaning actions are foiled at every turn. His luck seems to change when he meets the glamorous blonde Mirja (Maria Jarvenhelmi), but too late finds himself helplessly embroiled in a world of criminal deceit and lies.
Bergman's third film depicts a powerful love triangle between an abusive sailor, his son and a chorus girl. Upon receiving the news that he is losing his sight, Alexander recklessly invites his mistress to move aboard. In the midst of this tense environment, an illicit romance develops between Johannes and his father's lover, leading to a confrontation between father and son with tragic consequences.
