Connor McLeod (Christopher Lambert) survives a wound that should kill him in a clan battle in the Scottish Highlands in 1536, and is banished from his village. Years later McLeod is met by Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery), a swordsman who teaches McLeod the truth about himself; he is immortal, one of a race of many who can only die when the head is cut from the body. When one immortal takes the head of another, the loser's power is absorbed into the winner. Ramirez teaches McLeod the ways of the sword, until he is killed by gravest foe, the evil Kurgan (Clancy Brown) who lusts for the ultimate power of the immortals, "The Prize"; enough power to rule the earth forever. McLeod must fight his way through the centuries until the time of the Gathering, when the few immortals who have survived the ages will come together to fight until only one remains. In the year 2029, interstellar reconnaissance missions are relegated to chimpanzee pilots from the space station Oberon in deep space. On one such mission, a chimp loses communication and vanishes from the radar.

Following a dramatic rock fall at a South African gold mine, the rescue party, headed by Rod Slater, (Roger Moore) are puzzled to discover the body of General manager Frank Lemmer - a veteran miner - in the prohibited Big Dyke area of the mine.

Meanwhile, in London, the mine's managing director, Manfred Steyner, is hatching a plot against its owner Harry Hirschfeld (Ray Milland) with English financier Farrell (John Gielgud). Slater must now be persuaded - innocently - to take his place and is shown a doctored copy of a geologist's survey showing a rich seam of gold beyond the Big Dyke, which Steyner encourages him to excavate. Slater encounters a plot of deception and intrigue, as well as finding romance in the form of Steyner's beautiful wife Terry (Susannah York). Slater is called on to save the mine and its workers when the conspirators try to blow it up.
