In the early 90s, cult filmmaker Wong Kar Wai and fellow Hong Kong director Jeff Lau established Jet Tone Films, an independent production company responsible for some of the most remarkable films to have emerged from the region. Jeff Lau's film 'The Eagle Shooting Heroes' is based upon the same famous Louis Cha navel as Wong's own 'Ashes of Time', which was shot concurrently and shares much of the same star-studded cast. A complete subversion of the Wu Xia Pian martial arts genre, Lau's film is a wickedly funny parody which piles on love triangles, bizarre musical numbers and entertaining action sequences choreographed by Sammo Hung [Enter the Dragon) to create one of Hong Kong cinema's mast beloved cult classics.
Ashes of Time is inspired by characters from Louis Cha’s novel The Eagle-Shooting Heroes. It centers on a man named Ouyang Feng. His wounded heart has made him pitiless and cynical, but his encounters with friends, clients and future enemies make him conscious of his solitude... The flag is still. The wind is calm. It’s the heart of man that is in turmoil! The story takes place in the jianghu, the world of the martial arts. Ouyang Feng has lived in the western desert for some years. He left his home in White Camel Mountain when the woman he loved chose to marry his elder brother rather than him. Instead of seeking glory, he ends up as an agent. When people come to him with a wish to eliminate someone who has wronged them, he puts them in touch with a swordsman who can do the job.

Although he is shocked when he learns of her true identity, he nevertheless marries her to the satisfaction of all concerned. Set in the kingdom of Oudh during the last days of the Moghul Empire, 'The Chess Players' marked the first time that the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray worked outside of his native Bengal. The story follows two Indian noblemen (Saeed Jaffrey and Sanjeev Kumar) whose obsession with the game of chess renders them oblivious to the treacherous and historic events happening around them. In one of his finest performances, Richard Attenborough stars as General Outram, the British officer who covertly manoeuvres on behalf of the East India Company to seize control of the region and depose its King.
Made in quick succession in 1970 and 1971, 'Beware of a Holy Whore' and 'The Merchant of Four Seasons' represent a key stage in the career of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the point at which he matured as a filmmaker and first began to attract an international audience. A fictional recounting of the making of Whity, Fassbinder's take on the American West, 'Beware of a Holy Whore' is a backstage melodrama set in a Spanish seaside hotel. Starring Lou Castel (Requiescant) as the director and Eddie Constantine (Alphaville) as himself, the film is an intriguing and often acidic look through the mirror at Fassbinder and his 'family' of cast and crew. 'The Merchant of Four Seasons' concerns itself with Flans, a fruit seller, former Foreign Legionnaire and family man. Inspired by the discovery of Douglas Sirk's work - and set, like those classic melodramas, in the 1950s - Fassbinder charts Flans' downfall with a perfect blend of poignancy and high drama. The Sirkian formula worked so well it would inspire a new phase in the director's output and produce such classics as 'The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and Fear Eats the Soul'.
