I rented it thinking it would a light hearted story of a "Coyote Ugly" type I was right when it comes to the story line but nothing else. Singing is considerably better as we witness a few show songs by Cher and Christina but that still doesn't make up for the fact how bad their acting is. I know it might have been pretty optimistic to rent it for the acting but it was so bad I almost turned it off Very unconvincing parts on behalf of both of the ladies The only forgiving grace was the male actor playing Jack.
Poorly acted and a desperately thin mediocre plot. There is the odd decent song to enjoy but unless you are a rabid fan of American razzmatazz there's precious little to recommend
Burlesque is a musical starring two eminent names from the pop world Cher and Christina Aguilera. Ali (Aguilera) is a small town girl who leaves for Los Angeles in order to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. She finally lands up in a burlesque bar owned by Tess (Cher). Meanwhile, the bar faces the risk of extinction in the hands of rich businessman Marcus who wants to build luxury condos in that place. The movie follows Ali on her dream of becoming a singer and her romance with bartender Jack.
In addition to the main characters, the film has a good line of supporting cast including Kirsten Bell, Cam Gigandet, Stanley Tucci, Eric Dane and Alan Cumming etc. All these actors are effectively used in this movie and it is quite amazing to see their performance. However, the main attraction in the film, of course, is Cher and Christina Aguilera. Christina suits well for this musical film which demands a powerful voice and good performance.
The transition of Ali from a modest girl to a big musical star is showcased perfectly. However, the movie defies certain logic too. Firstly, the bar is shown well enough in this movie and it is revealed to be a small place. How on earth could Marcus build a skyscraper in there? Another thing is the clichéd and predictable romance brewing scenes between Ali and the bartender Jack.
Burlesque may not be a musical masterpiece but is worth watching due to the performance of the lead artists and the fine songs of Aguilera. The movie is also well suited for family audience as it doesn’t portray any pole dances or nudity.
