A member of the Italian cannibal subgenre popularized in the 1970s and '80s,"Cannibal Ferox" is particularly rough from the off, and will not be to every taste,it is meant to shock ,disturb, and to make the audience quiver, with an emphasis on gore and suffering giving. The film's US distributor claimed it was "the most violent film ever made",sensationalist advertising of this film? Probably! Accept the film for what it is 'plenty of blood and guts'
I'm sort of having a mid life video nasties crisis at the moment, re watching all those so called films that were so depraved that they would corrupt us all and end up being banned. Actually most of them were laughable and never warranted the video nasty tag. Is Cannibal Ferox as bad as I remember it..... well probably, but it has to be said that the intended shock impact of the film is completely diminished by the heavy censor cuts by our beloved BBFC.
Thanks to CinemaParadiso I'm in the process of indulging myself in the viewing of a slew of previously unseen 'classic' horror movies that appear on various lists of 'Horror Films you must watch before you die' and I'm, for the most part, enjoying the bumpy ride.
Then came Umberto Lenzi's 'Cannibal Ferox'.... This film is an absolute stinker from beginning to end. Seriously, this turkey has no redeemable features whatsoever. As a horror fan I'm unshockable when it comes to scares, gore, profanity, sex, nudity or anything else a good horror film can sling my way but 'Ferox' is just badly made guff.
If like me you're not averse to an entertaining low budget splatter-fest, then I'd advise you to look elsewhere because this is uninspired horseshit.
