filmed really well youd think it was made in the 90s - Mid90s review by sw

this is a gritty kind of film that resembles how things were in the 90s. its more so for people who grow up in America as skaters but i could still connect to parts of it growing up in the 90s.

while watching it i had to check when it came out as it looks like any other film from the 90s, the quality and framing makes you think its 20 years old.

films its simular to would be, kids, boys in the hood

This Is LA - Mid90s review by RW

Though I thoroughly enjoyed this film I'm surprised at how little reference in reviews that I have seen have been made to the Shane Meadow's film This Is England. If you swap the location from Nottingham England to LA USA, time period from the early 80s to the title's mid 90s and passion from Skinhead to Skating, plus trim down the plot, you have Mid90s. Still like I've said I really liked this, it did indeed feel like life in the mid 90s and though I was never a skater friends were and I recognised the characters portrayed. Far better than I was expecting.

Interesting Coming-of-Age Drama - Mid90s review by GI

Spoiler Alert

This is quite an accomplished directorial debut from Jonah Hill who also wrote the screenplay which is loosely autobiographical. It's a sort of coming-of-age social drama and clearly heavily influenced by This Is England (2006). Set in 1990s Los Angeles young Stevie lives with his single mother (Katherine Waterston) and his elder brother Ian (Lucas Hedges), who bullies him ruthlessly. Wandering the streets Stevie eventually latches onto a group of street kids who are every parents nightmare but they become Stevie's surrogate family and he finds life lessons and real affection with them. They all bond through skateboarding and whilst they get into some scrapes it soon becomes apparent that they are a force for good in Stevie's life. The film recreates the times with impeccable detail but it's in the interaction between the gang that the film reveals true heart. Don't be put off by the skateboarding aspect, this not a film that is concerned with that activity as a cultural phenomenon, it's just the catalyst to explore the benefit of friendship, loyalty and ultimately love. Worth checking out.
