Synopsis:
This essential piece of cinema for romantics everywhere follows the fictionalized footsteps of what may have inspired one of France's literary greats, Moliere, to pen his infamous masterpiece 'Tartuffe'. Rotting away in prison and in a mountain of debt, Moliere's only hope of freedom is to help the buffoonish Mr. Jourdain seduce a beautiful young widow behind his wife's back. Disguised as a priest, he moves in with the Jourdain family to begin a calamitous, hilarious and ultimately romantic set of adventures.

Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme revisited - Molière review by CC

Spoiler Alert
26/03/2018

This is very funny, but you will definitely get the most out of it if you know Molière's plays. There are references to several of them, and whole chunks of the dialogue have been lifted pretty much straight from the plays, primarily Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme.

Shakespeare en amour - Molière review by Pete W

Spoiler Alert
10/01/2009

Someone in France saw "Shakespeare in Love" and decided to do something similar about their national playwright, Moliere. Entertaining enough but I expect it would have been more interesting if I had more than a long forgotten French A level standard acquaintance with the works of Moliere

Absolute heaven - hilarious and touching - Molière review by LA

Fantastic team of actors play a made up Moliere adventure exploring many of the tropes of his plays, comedy as tragedy, obsessional love, general human folly in the most glorious period chateau setting, with all the manners and splendour of the Comedie Francaise. Bewitching and hysterically funny.
