Dire, annoying, sub-Tarantina cartoon character gorefest set in Finland with cartoon Nazis
- Sisu review by PV
I LOVED the subversive Christmas film RARE EXPORTS by the same writer director - 5 stars for that.
This however is DREADFUL - a sub-Tarantino grand guignol gorefest as tedious as the awful over-rated Inglorios Basterds or whatever nonsense fake spelling the over-rated Quentin used.
Divided into chapters - always a bad sign,. Pretentious nonsense. Watch THE WINTER WAR for a Finnish film instead or WILD MEN which is fun.
Cartoon character violence from a main character who should be in a comic book - I did not believe a single word or scene, the whole thing is absurd. like SUperman, but way more boring.
I almost want to give this 1 start, but 1.5 rounded up.

Entertaining OTT actioner
- Sisu review by Alphaville
Visually striking action movie set in the atmospheric landscapes of Lapland, where an indestructible Finnish ex-commando (eat your heart out, John Wicke) sets about despatching evil English-speaking Nazis. As long as you can stomach spurting blood and flying limbs, this is black-humour OTT action with little dialogue, plot or even pacing to get in the way. Sure, the English-speaking Nazis are pantomime villains and there’s no way our hero would survive some of the scrapes he gets into. Go with it. Director Jalmari Helender does wonders with his budget and you never feel short-changed by the visual effects. Perhaps it’s only a 3-star film, but it deserves an extra star for ambition. The DVD has a couple of interesting features about the shoot and the effects, during which the director promises never to make a film with two people arguing in a room. Right on. British film industry please take note.

Ridiculously silly
- Sisu review by MB
I don't know where to start! This film had so much potential and could have been a 4 or 5 star job. However, it was just ridiculously stupid. I don't want to give too much away, as it was generally a very enjoyable romp, but it had far too many stupidly 'mystical' unrealsitic escapes. I'd like to at least discuss the hanging and plane crash scenes with the filmmakers one day!

Bloody, Crazy But Great Fun
- Sisu review by GI
You need a hugely enjoyable B movie type action film every so often and this delivers brilliantly. It's a glorious, bloody war based film that has the stamp of Quentin Tarantino all over it (it has 'chapters' that QT often uses), and I'm sure he'll be a fan, as well as the hallmarks of films like First Blood (1982) and the John Wick series. Set in Finland in 1944 where a grizzled gold prospector avoids the war living in the remote Lapland area. Finding a rich vein he sets off with his gold to the nearest city to cash it in but on the way he's accosted by a company of SS soldiers who try to steal it. A big mistake as the old miner has a past and a skill set that is awoken to dire consequences for the Nazis. This is brutally violent with some crazy set pieces. The main character hardly says a word until the film's final moments and this is part of makes this film work so well. Like John Rambo he's man after some calmness and peace but once aroused to action he's simply unstoppable. Great fun, and rattles along at a solid pace and is wrapped up in a tight 90 minutes.

Expected more

FILM & REVIEW Saw the trailer for this and thought I’ll have some of that…..and (I know this may be a minority view ) but kinda the trailer was the best thing about it.. Set in Finland in 1944 a retired Finnish commando is panning for gold and strikes the motherlode. On his way back to cash in he comes across a retreating Nazi patrol with some female captives that are used for mobile r&r. The Nazi’s discover the gold and attempt to relieve him of it….which is the first mistake they make… Soon they begin to realise they have come across a killing machine called Korpi (Tommila) who stops at nothing. The body count soon mounts up with Nazi’s stabbed, shot, impaled and blown to pieces while Korpi endures enough to kill 100 men. It has a strong Tarantino vibe but but it just came over a little flat to me - Tomilla is solid in the mainly silent role while the rest are out of Nazi central casting - it was quite fun but I kinda expected more - 3/5
