- Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet), a beautiful and talented misfit, after many years working as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, returns home to the tiny middle-of-nowhere town of Dungatar to right the wrongs of the past. Not only does she reconcile with her ailing, eccentric mother Molly (Judy Davis) and unexpectedly falls in love with the pure-hearted Teddy (Liam Hemsworth), but armed with her sewing machine and incredible sense of style, she transforms the women of the town and in so doing gets sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.

Looks a bit like Madonna do you think now? Especially in harsh make up.
The Australians do some really good natural films. Bit like some Brit films when they are on form. Just shows you do not need loads of top names and exploding livers, with a mass of computer effects, to make an interesting and clever film.
Could almost have gone 5 stars compared to most of the banal offerings that come out now.............

Silly and nasty - The Dressmaker review by Cliff
I wouldn't have thought it possible for a film to be both silly and nasty at the same time, but this one is. The competent film-making and good performances, particularly by Judy Davis, are all wasted on a story-line that would have been rejected for Tom and Jerry. Basically the film can't decide whether it is a dark comedy or a menacing tale of hatred and revenge, and so it fails on both counts.
It does have its moments, but these are not sufficient to salvage this one from the B-movie bin. Two hours of my life I will never get back.

Disappointing - The Dressmaker review by JP
Did not enjoy this and stopped watching after about 20 minutes. Surprised at the 12 rating-more like a 15 to me. At times violent and cruel. Perhaps indicative of the time and place it was set but not at all what I wanted to watch.
