- To Bull McCabe (Richard Harris) it is his life. But now the field he has worked and loved for as long as he can remember is to be sold by public auction.
When an American (Tom Berenger) bids for the land against Bull, the stage is set for a fearful confrontation that both men are determined to win. With both the land and their livelihood at stake Bull and his son attempt to frighten off the American. It's a battle that they can't afford to lose. Huge drama - The Field review by CW
This drama is Shakespearen in depth. Arguably the best role of Richard Harris’ career. I was barely able to recognize the chameleon John Hurd in his role as town fool. As story unfolds you know that it cannot have a happy ending. In this land of barren rocky ground, Richard Harris “the Bull” started working in a rented field with his parents. Now an old but extremely strong man, he hopes to pass the field on to his son. The widow who owns the field decides to sell it at auction. An outsider, an American, comes to the village to buy the land. Everyone loses. The ending is as dramatic as it gets. Not a happy story but one well worth seeing.

yeh good - The Field review by sb
Not as Good as Lean's 'Ryan's Daughter', It doesn't quite get to that powerful and sad presence.
But it still is worth watching- the build up is good- the characters are as well-- just doesn't quite work at the end..
