The heart-warming comedy drama is set against a backdrop of the stunning Australian outback. When Lucky Flynn (Tim Minchin) learns that his estranged mother is dying, he embarks on a road trip across Australia to see her, packing nothing but an upright piano for the journey. In a dramatic twist of fate, his plans are soon turned upside down when his path collides with runaway teenager Meg (Milly Alcock), who has some demons of her own. The pair forge an unlikely friendship as they drive, hitch and scam their way across the Nullarbor Plain in a race against time, and through a series of quirky happenings we slowly learn what each of them might be running away from. Humour, emotion, with a little bit of music and some great landscapes. - Upright: Series 1 review by SR
This quickly became my favourite TV series in years. Having watched all 8 episodes with my other half over 3 nights, I'm left feeling satisfied with the conclusion, yet wanting to see more from these characters that I fell in love with. Except I wouldn't want them to make a second season as the first is perfect. If you're worried that this is going to be some Tim Minchin musical/satire vehicle loosely disguised as a TV comedy drama, then don't be. Whilst it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the part of Lucky, you don't have to be a fan of Tim Minchin's touring material to enjoy this - the occasional songs are a natural part of the story and don't feel awkwardly shoehorned in, the dialogue is funny, the characters feel real even when their capers get far-fetched, and the chemistry between the leads is great.

Tim Minchin further extends his well-earned Midas touch in this Australian TV series. The story of a middle aged man crossing the desert towing a piano, accompanied by a runaway adolescent girl might not sound promising material but it proves to be the perfect setting for adventures that will have you laughing, and then crying, as it turns on a sixpence. My wife and I loved it so much we sincerely hope they avoid the temptation to make a second series. Nothing should be allowed to spoil this one, which is magnificent.

Piano land survival with a camel and a kanger and a kooky cast. - Upright: Series 1 review by jl
It started slowly and then a glimpse of humour and a growing involvement. The short 30 minute episodes helped and we got involved and stayed in till the end. Nice performance especially the young girl. Minchin wears well and a road trip through the outback is what you want on cold English winter eve.
