Synopsis:
Soar to new heights in this spellbinding film starring Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage. To escape an irrational world, Birdy (Modine), a Vietnam veteran, sits in an almost catatonic state in an Army hospital, where he has come to believe he is one of the feathered creatures of his boyhood dreams. In an effort to break Birdy's silence, his psychiatrist brings in Al Columbato (Cage), Birdy's loyal best friend from childhood. Al desperately tries to reach the disturbed Birdy and bring him back to reality. The answer may lie in their youth, where the eccentric Birdy first donned wings and the happy-go-lucky Al helped him to fly.

Birdy flying high - Birdy review by RP

While the film falls well short of the brilliant book. It is well worth rewatching what I remember was an outstanding and atmospheric film. The leads are good at what would turn out to be the beginnings of great carers for them both. Underlying the basic plot is the need to stay safe in the security of happy times while pushing out the nightmares of later experiences.

The soundtrack by Peter Gabriel regurgitating some of his music from earlier albums also works really well. Although maybe the film feels a bit dated now. It still has an atmosphere and style that still packs a few surprises.
