Synopsis:
A young woman plays a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with England's most famous serial killer. London, 1888. German photographer Anna Kosminski (Sonja Gerhardt) arrives in England with the dream of starting a new life for herself, but soon discovers that the only thing waiting for her in the notorious district of Whitechapel is tragedy, violence and murder. The city is suffering in the bloody wake of 'Jack the Ripper', a mysterious madman whose reign of terror has claimed the lives of five prostitutes, with each victim mutilated in ways more grisly than the last.
When the battered corpse of his fifth victim is discovered by police in the bed of Anna's brother, Jakob (Vladimir Burlakov), he is charged and locked away in a lunatic asylum to await a lobotomy. Anna refuses to believe that her brother could be 'Jack the Ripper', and sets out to prove that he is innocent. Her investigations soon grab the attention of someone claiming to be none other than 'The Ripper' himself. For Anna, the race is on to uncover the truth once and for all, or risk becoming the serial killer's next victim.

Lavish, well told, sags a little in the middle. - Jack the Ripper review by NP

Spoiler Alert
16/09/2021

This German recounting of the exploits of the Whitechapel Murderer is a well told, lavish looking adaption of the story that sags just a little in the middle.

Anna Kosminski (Sonja Gerhardt) travels to London to discover that her brother Jakob is in an asylum and has been wrongly accused of carving up locals – or so she believes. Swimming against the stream, she sets out to find the truth behind the accusations and exposing one of history’s most notorious killers. Whether she succeeds or not is for the viewer to find out – but I would recommend the journey.

The recreation of London in 1888 is painstakingly achieved and the acting, taking into consideration the English dub, is uniformly excellent. The plot twists and turns and offers up a few genuine surprises, although don’t expect a particularly accurate representation of the facts (after all, this doesn’t pretend to be a documentary). My score is 7 out of 10.

Execrable - Jack the Ripper review by RT

Spoiler Alert
20/11/2017

I don't remember ordering this and it might have been sent out by mistake. From the sets, through o the cast - mainly speaking a poorly attempted effort in late 19th century London English. Made it about 20 minutes through impossibly modern US dialogue (with an occasional attempt at a cockney colloquialism. I then decided that life was short enough.

Let it be a warning.

Dubbed! - Jack the Ripper review by MF

Spoiler Alert
03/02/2018

I haven't seen a dubbed film since the 1980s when Dutch films were always dubbed rather than subtitled. Although the premise of the film was intriguing for someone interested in the subject, I had to give up after about 5 minutes. Not only was this dubbed, but it was dubbed by Americans! Not particularly authentic for Victorian England. Avoid at all costs, unless they manage to produce a subtitled version. I might be inclined to give it another go then.
