Figment of Truth or Imagination
- The Exception review by KW
Apart from an excellent performance from Christopher Plummer and Janet McTear as the Kaiser and his wife, this film was designed to be watchable on a very rainy day with nothing else to do!

THE EXCEPTION

It was all a bit obvious and boring. I though Christopher Plummer played a good part though, otherwise poor film.

This has to be one of the worst movies I have seen this year.
The story is pure rubbish.
It is totally implausible , concerning the exciled Kaiser Wilhelm in 1941, and a British spy who happens to be a maid in the house. The head of security orders her to strip naked on their first meeting ? Why other than a gratuitous sex seen. At their next meeting, she orders him to strip, hence an excuse for another gratuitous sex seen.
I could go on but it gets worse, ..............

So so

A bit unbelievable and not that gripping. Did feel abit like watching a stage play, heres one scene, now here's another. However Christopher Plummer and Eddie Marsan were good.

This film deserves a viewing.

I watched this film having read the reviews and had mixed thoughts as to whether I would be wasting my time. However I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Yes the storyline is a little thin at times and is certainly predictable but overall I felt that this was a reasonable adaptation of a war time love story mixed with intrigue and deception. It's not a blockbuster but it certainly is worth viewing. I look forward to reading further reviews on this.

Engrossing old-fashioned thriller
- The Exception review by Alphaville
The poor title hides a fascinating subject. It’s 1940 and Germany is invading Holland, where the old Kaiser from World War 1 (played sympathetically by Christopher Plummer) is in exile. Who knew that? Which side is he on? Lily James is an Allied spy in his household. She and the German officer assigned to keep tabs on him (Jai Courtney) fall in love. Will Lily carry out her mission? What will her German lover do? What will happen to the Kaiser? What’s Himmler, played by a memorably chilling Eddie Marsan, up to?
This is an old-fashioned thriller with a terrific premise and a plot that keeps you hooked. The pacing will be too stately for Marvel universe fanboys, but as intrigue piles on intrigue the film delivers a tense third act that will have you rooting for the star-crossed lovers and others too.

Characterful

Not perhaps the most complex of plots but nevertheless it was well played and the story moved along nicely. Not interested in whether historical licence has been applied, just enjoy for what it is, entertainment
