I love fantasy films and was really looking forward to watching this...what a disappointment!
This was a dark (in the literal sense as a major part of the film was set at sea in a thick fog which, even praying to the ALMIGHTY above couldn't shift!!)
There was no story line, a few skirmishes and a very disappointing ending.
A totally disappointing film on a subject, that in this day and age of cinema graphics, could have given so much more...
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WATCHING THIS!!
No budget, no plot, no sense. What was the point? Graphic violence with no purpose. A pagan accompanies a group of Christian warriors to the Holy Land for no particular reason (he cannot talk) and they proceed to fall out or fall victim to natives (they improbably end up in Americas - a bit of a journey) so pagans triumph in the end, but so what? Avoid a boring 90 minutes and don't bother.
I was impressed with this film. It is a kind of Viking "Heart of Darkness" with a strong existentialist element around alienation, isolation and moral absurdity. The actors and the settings are magnificent, with quite lengthy camera shots and silences interweaved with moments of great violence. The young actor alongside Mads Mikkelsen is excellent, but so are the whole cast. Not a film for everyone, but if you like brooding medieval historical epics with great camera work and landscapes, but not much dialogue, you may like this one.
