Amazingly uplifting story
- Breathe review by Champ
The synopsis of this film would put most people off - a man is paralysed from the next down after contracting polio, and then lives with it for 30 years. But in fact, the film is wonderfully uplifting and inspiring, and great illustration of the tenacity of the human spirit. Of course, the tragedy of the story is very tragic indeed, and the tears definitely flowed at some points of the film, but the was lots and lots of laughter too.
The cast is excellent throughout, but Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy deserve to be singled out for portraying what is essentially a deep and moving love story. The phrase "love conquers all" is the sort of cliche that would normally make me gag, but in this case it damn well did!

Rent it!

Great film. Follows a long line of similar films that portray the resilience of folk faced with life threatening illnesses and how they fight back with amazing tenacity.
In Breathe Andrew cavendish contracts polio and is left in a state of permanent paralysis. His wife will not let him give in and anchors him to life. Together they change history by turning conventional medical science of the time upside down. With the help of a friend a wheelchair is built that can carry and deliver oxygen. This wheelchair transforms the lives of many more of these hospital bound polio victims who had more or less been written off.
Along with You before me, The best of men, Brief history of time and Untouchable - Breathe is a deeply moving film that retaliates against big brother, and wins . Highly recommended. Rent it !

A clear and engaging account of a struggle against the odds that changed many people's lives, in this case in the treatment of polio victims, recommended.

enjoyable and informative film

Well worth watching. Great casting and nicely filmed with lots of historical interest. The more difficult side of caring for the severely disabled, day on day, is not represented in the film, but despite that its a very watchable film

Absorbing and Uplifting Film.

Did not have high expectations as I'd not heard of the film. Was very pleasantly surprised therefore. Great (often funny) actors and acting and what a brilliant uplifting story. Thank you.

Bittersweet film based on a true story
- Breathe review by AP
Brilliantly filmed with some really professional actors. A reminder of how far medicine has come in the latter half of the twentieth century. Poignant scenes and places beautifully shot. Tissues required in some of the scenes but the unconditional love of Diana was uplifting and deserves our admiration. A great movie

Inspirational movie
- Breathe review by CCC
Breathe is a film not to be missed. It is beautifully acted, entertaining and inspiring. It was fascinating to learn more about the history of polio treatment, films based on true stories are very often the best in my experience. I agree with the reviewer who said one shouldn't be put off by the potentially depressing subject of someone suffering from serious illness; it is not a depressing film.
