Exciting thriller never lets up - Escape Room review by Alphaville

Spoiler Alert
01/03/2020

Six strangers come together for an escape room game that’s more lethal than they expected. It’s a premise that could be limited and stagey, but it turns out to deliver an action-packed, fun-filled thrillfest. The format enables the plot to move from room to room and keep things moving at a fast click as our protagonists try to figure out how to escape the life-threatening traps set in each.

It’s pacy and imaginative, with the characters back stories woven in skilfully. And it keeps it up right to the unexpected end. The one mistake is the opening, which unnecessarily attempts to grab the viewer’s attention by showing part of the climax (the bulk of the film is shown in flashback). This only diminishes the drama later on. As does the tell-all trailer. AVOID THE TRAILER.

Mixed bag of films - Escape Room review by sg

There is not one bad comment from me about this film. Its a mixture of (in my opinion) Saw, Final Destination and Hostel. All of the actors are not well known and that makes it a superb film, there's no saying Suchabody give a an over acted performance. Its a gripping film from start to end. Bring on Escape room 2,3,4, and 5. EXCELLENT ACTING AND STORY!!!!

Derivative B-Movie with Some Scares and Lots of Silliness - Escape Room review by PV

Spoiler Alert
22/11/2019

As others have said, this is very like some SAW movies and maybe HOSTEL and FINAL DESTINATION. It also harks back to various Portmanteau films of the past, often from HAMMER, such as Dr Terror's House of Horror, Ghost Train and Torture Garden and more, where several stories are in one movie. here that is via separate characters' back stories. Totally unbelievable of course, but enjoyable enough - it is what it is. Reminds me a bit of TV series WEST WORLD too.

Some imaginative and fun set-ups here. Heat, cold, various dangers and deaths. Tension mounts and I suppose it ends in an OK way, and no doubt sequels will come as this sort of simple B-movie violent stuff appeals to teenagers. Probably a good movie to see at a noisy cinema on a Friday night.

Gets a bit sillier as it goes on - and the obligatory ethnic quotas and the 'strong independent' woman new stereotype here yet again. How many movies now have a small female somehow overpowering several large men eh? Sheer femi-fantasy and silly. Risks challenging the willing suspension of belief we all need to enjoy stories.

But OK - no more, though. 3 stars.
