Best known for his pioneering 'Quatermass' stories and harrowing adaptation of George Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty Four', as well as later TV triumphs 'The Stone Tape' and 'The Woman in Black', Nigel Kneale is widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest scriptwriters. Making his name at the BBC in the 1950's, he subsequently wrote acclaimed dramas for ITV over the following decades - of which three are presented here. The plays on this set showcase some of Kneale's most enduring themes: a deep sympathy for the plight of the individual facing an unimaginable threat; the unease and paranoia of the Cold War era, and fears of an uncertain near-future; and the volatility and potential menace of the crowd.

She embarks on a passionate, stormy and potentially tragic relationship, which places her life in even greater danger. Catherine pursues her investigations until, finally, on Midsummer's Eve and with the Pagan Nordic celebrations at their height, the last piece of the jigsaw falls into place, and she comes face to face with her own would-be killer. And the Maelstrom into which she has been inexorably drawn threatens to engulf her...
Despite his enduring status as one of Britain's bestloved entertainers, 'Our Miss Fred' represents a rare foray onto the big screen for Danny La Rue. Here he plays Shakespearean actor Fred Wimbush, called up for service during the Second World War. Sent to war-torn France, Wimbush is appearing in drag in a camp variety show when the Nazis arrive. His only hope for survival is to remain in costume and pass as a woman. In his efforts to escape, Wimbush falls in with a party of schoolgirls whose boisterous antics would put the St Trinian's to shame.
Reuniting again in this BBC series, first broadcast in 1973, the pair put their heads together to reexamine the unsolved case of 'Jack the Ripper', trawling through the archives in an effort to uncover the true identity of the killer. This six-part TV drama is riddled with conspiracy theories, contradictory information and insufficient evidence. The confusion and difficulties that Barlow (Stratford Johns) and Watt (Frank Windsor) confront echo those faced by the police during their original investigation. Through a discussion-based structure, interspersed with dramatised documentary-style scenes set in the 19th century, the pair not only examine prominent suspects and theories but also delve into the lesser known suggestions, including the Royal conspiracy. Will they succeed in finding the true identity of Jack the Ripper?
Comic legend Zero Mostel mixes slapstick and surrealism as a tardy opera star traversing London in 'Ride of the Valkyrie' while 'Red, White and Zero', scripted by Shelagh Delaney, blends realism and poetry with poetry with New Wave detachment as a young woman travels home from the north of England. Tony Richardson (Tom Jones) directs Vanessa Redgrave in the final part of the film, 'Red and Blue', a musical, melancholy romantic reverie.
